BURNING MAN TRIP PLANNER
Use the following tasks to help you plan your trip to Burning Man:
April - June
- Submit your project proposal to your supervisor or editor. Request budget for travel, equipment, and ticket expenses.
- Buy Burning Man tickets for your team.
- Register your project on our Media Registration Form. Remember that there will only be limited video crews allowed at Burning Man!
- If you are flying, make your plane and rental car reservations. Tip: make RV reservations early if you don't plan to stay in your tent! Most RVs rentals in Northern California and Nevada are reserved by May. No joke.
July
- August 5 is the deadline for all film and video proposals, and if you wait until the deadline is near, there is a very real chance we'll have to turn you away. Our experience has shown us that if you don't have a proposal to us by now, you might not be fully prepared for the event. We are also very entrenched in planning as the season wears on, so it is necessary to get your request squared away as early as possible. We rejected more than 30 proposals in 2007 because they came in past the deadline.
- Read the Burning Man website and contact press(at)burningman(dot)com regarding artists or participants you want to interview.
- Start stockpiling camping and items to share for your trip. As part of your plans, remember that you will need at least two gallons of water PER PERSON per day. Yes, you will need all of it for drinking, showering, and dishes.
- Coordinate with friends a time/place to meet up at Burning Man. Find out which camp they will be staying at and when they plan to arrive.
- Connect with your local Burning Man community to plug into experienced burners and/or to get a bead on the local angle.
August - September
- August 15 is the media registration deadline for all outlets. Don't be left in the dust!
- Make sure the details of your site license and contract have been settled with your Media Mecca representative.
- Make final travel and camping preparations with your team.
- Begin regular monitoring of the weather on the playa. Try http://www.weather.com for up-to-date information on whether you will need a parka or bikini — usually, you’ll want them both.
- As soon as you arrive onsite, come to Media Mecca and check in.
- Enjoy the event! (This should be the easy part.)
Immediately After the Event:
- Tell everyone at work how much fun you had at Burning Man. Make them feel sorry they called you a freak for taking the assignment.
Within 90 Days of the Event:
- Video, Photo, and Film projects: be sure to follow up on your raw footage requirements for Burning Man's archive. Read the Use Agreement for more information.
When Your Project is Completed:
- Submit your finished piece to Burning Man for the archive, and, for video projects, for final review before distribution. Contact press(at)burningman(dot)com for more information.
